Boomers one win away from Asia Cup playoffs
THE Australian Boomers have trounced Hong Kong 99-58 in their second match of the FIBA Asia Cup in Beirut and are one win away from direct passage to the quarter-finals.
The Aussies dominated the boards, claiming a 48-26 rebound edge that included 17 offensive boards. That was despite David Andersen and Brad Newley being rested.
Sydney Kings swingman Todd Blanchfield led scoring for the Boomers with 18 points, while Mitch Creek notched 15 and Cam Gliddon 12. Creek also pulled down nine rebounds, while Jason Cadee topped the assists with five.
The Boomers shot 13-35 (37%) from three-point range and were never troubled by Hong Kong, taking a 13-point lead at the first break. They went on a 17-0 run across the first two quarters.
With Australia sitting first in Group D, their next match is against Chinese Taipei on Saturday night, with victory offering them a direct entry into the quarter-finals.
