Carlton Blues skipper gives John Barker his backing

CARLTON captain Marc Murphy has added his voice to those calling for interim coach John Barker to be given the job full-time.

Barker took over from the axed Mick Malthouse in round nine, and has led the team to two victories - against Port Adelaide and Gold Coast - and five losses by an average margin of 30 points. That compares favourably to what Malthouse achieved in the first eight rounds - a win against St Kilda and an average losing margin of 50 points.

Set to play his 200th game tonight against premier Hawthorn, Murphy told reporters Barker had backed the players and allowed them to play with more freedom.

"I'd love to see Johnny get the job.

"The club's got to go through the process of trying to find the best man for the job. What he's done over the last six or seven weeks has been really good for the footy club," Murphy (pictured) said.
