QUEENSLAND'S justice leader said he was appealing the "grotesque" alpaca bashings at Caboolture to show offenders they would not get away with a "slap on the wrist" approach.

Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said he was waiting on an appeal date to argue sentences against two teens were manifestly inadequate.

Bellmere teen Wayne Charles Hartwig and a Caboolture 16-year-old threw rocks at the Caboolture High School alpacas, then whipped and beat them with a large metal pole, after drinking a carton of premixed drinks.

The brutal attack, captured on CCTV, lasted half an hour and left one alpaca dead.

The other had to be euthanised.

Hartwig got six months jail but was released on immediate parole. The juvenile got 12 months probation and 80 hours community service.

"For this one I wanted to set a clear example that as a government we don't tolerate this sort of behaviour in our society," Mr Bleijie said.

"It is grotesque and we'll do whatever we can to ensure the protection of both the citizens of Queensland and also, in this case, those alpacas at a school farm that were brutally mutilated."

Mr Bleijie said he had not yet received advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions about the prospects of appeal but he had ordered the appeal go ahead and was now awaiting a date.
