Vegetables prices through the roof as shelves run bare

THE price of vegetable staples like beans, celery and even some tomatoes has gone through the roof - and that's if you are lucky enough to find any on supermarket shelves.

Cyril Erbacher, from Erbacher's fruit and vegetable outlet, has been at the Brisbane Markets buying fresh stock but said many of the staple products people use in their meals, such as beans and celery, were almost too expensive to buy.

"Beans are in very short supply, they will be for another three to four weeks," Mr Erbacher said.

"They are asking $120 for a 10kg box.

"That's $12 a kilogram just to start with.

"Celery is also extremely dear. They are asking $36 for eight bunches. Some of it is as high as $45.

"I've never ever heard it for that price and I've been buying for 40 years.

Mr Erbacher said the fluctuating weather conditions were partly to blame for the short supply of some fruit and veg.

Many supermarkets store were out of the popular grape and cherry tomatoes and normal tomatoes were also fetching a high price.

Cabbage was another vegetable more expensive than usual.

"It's the hot weather followed by the cold weather," Mr Erbacher said.

"The fruit comes on early and then there is a cold snap and it stops growing."

Broccoli and cauliflower have been in good supply but he said that was about to change.

"By the end of the week we won't have any," Mr Erbacher said.

On the up side, there were plenty of supply of sweet potatoes and pineapples at a good price.

"Naval oranges and mandarins are also pretty good. We also have a lot of strawberries," Mr Erbacher said.

While some supermarkets had no supply of the popular grape tomatoes on their shelves on the weekend, Erbachers has a ready supply from a Noosa grower.
