Australian Geographic to help save Mary River turtle

TIARO Landcare will celebrate World Turtle Day with the news Australian Geographic Society has dedicated itself to helping to save the Mary River turtle.

The national society will host its own fundraising drive to help save the endangered species using specially made Mary River turtle fridge magnets.

Tiaro Landcare project officer Marilyn Connell said the group could hardly believe it when the society chose them to support.

"The AG Society is delighted to support small volunteer groups working on big recovery projects like this one," an AG society representative said.

In the last nesting season, Tiaro Landcare members protected 32 turtle nests along the Mary River.

More than 300 turtles successfully hatched.

The fundraising magnets will be available at Australian Geographic stores.
