SOUTH Burnett artists and photographers could soon take home a share of $2100, with the Kingaroy Concerned Citizens Group launching its 385 Alive! competition on Friday.

Group spokesman John Dalton said the project aimed to celebrate and preserve images of the farmland in the event the Moreton Resources Kingaroy coal mine went ahead.

"We wanted to focus attention on how we feel about the mine proposal, and what we stand to lose as a community and express this in the most positive way possible,” Mr Dalton said.

"At the moment for many landowners living on top of MDL 385, they are in a living grief stage.

"They live in constant state of anxiety and paralysis about whether this company from outside our community is going to take from us our identity, our place in the world and the social and environmental values we hold dear.”

Mr Dalton said the project had sections for primary and secondary school students, as well as open categories.

"(It) allows expressions using art, photography, dance, poetry and song,” he said.

"The competition is an opportunity to showcase the area to the wider community.

Prizes range from $5 to $35, with the main feature photography and feature art prize $500 each.

A special series of workshops will also be held with photographer Steve Parish, who will also give a free public lecture.

"It is something we are really looking forward to,” Mr Dalton said.
