IN 1969, Bill Taylor Snr and his two sons planted their 178-hectare vineyard in the Clare Valley, about one hour north of Adelaide, to create Taylor's Estate.
The winery is now headed up by Mitchell, (Bill Jnr's son) along with his two brothers Justin and Clinton. The Taylors are a founding member of the Australian First Families of Wine, with Mitchell as chairman. Strict rules govern membership.
The family-owned wineries must have a "landmark wine" considered "iconic". They must be able to show at least a 20-year vertical tasting, have a history of a minimum of two generations, have ownership of vineyards more than 50 years old and/or ownership of distinguished sites, and have a commitment to export and environmental best practices.
Taylors Estate wines are recognisable with their white label. Consistently good value, the wines can often be found well below their RRP.
Taylors Estate Riesling
Clare Valley, 2014: Smells like a room freshener: mandarin pith, lemon sherbet and lime juice. Bright and long citrus flavours combined with crunchy regional acidity make this incredibly refreshing. One for summer drinking.
Taylors Estate Tempranillo
Clare Valley, 2014: Pronounced temp-run-ee-yo, the grape is originally from Spain. Alluring aromas of dark chocolate, blueberry and black cherry. Medium bodied with dark, ripe fruits and a little spice. Soft yet grippy tannins. More-ish. Pair it with a steak sandwich.
Taylors Estate Cabernet
Clare Valley, 2013: The 40th vintage of this label and Taylors' most successful wine. Good cabernet sauvignon nose: Eucalypt, blackberry, mulberry and green brambles. Plenty of smooth, dark blackberry fruit and cassis. This has potential to cellar too.
