Sixteen die in hot air balloon disaster

SIXTEEN people have died in the worst hot air balloon crash in US history.

Details were sketchy, but US media said the balloon crashed in a field near Lockhart, Texas, and there were no survivors. Investigators were working on the theory the balloon hit powerlines before catching fire and crashing.

Local Margaret Wylie said she heard popping sounds like a gun going off as the balloon struck powerlines.

"It went up like a big fireball," she said.

The worst ballooning disaster in history happened near the Egyptian city of Luxor in February 2013, with 19 of the 21 on board killed.
