WHEN a girl told her mother that her stepfather had sexually abused and raped her, the mother took her to the police station the very next day.
Since then, it's been a "heart- and soul-destroying" few years for the former Hervey Bay family, but the mother, who lives in Caboolture, said she felt justice had been served after watching her former partner sentenced to jail yesterday.
But she wished the man, who was found guilty on Thursday of raping, attempting to rape and maintaining a sexual relationship with his stepdaughter, was slammed with a harsher sentence.
The 42-year-old man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the girl, was sentenced to a total of six-and-a-half years in jail for seven child sex offences.
He molested his stepdaughter between 2009 - when the girl was nine - and 2012.
It occurred in NSW and Caboolture and continued when the girl would visit the man when he and her mother separated.
Speaking outside court yesterday after the man was sentenced, the girl's mother said the man should be jailed for life.
"It definitely should be more," she said. "He should have got a life sentence.
"I got a life sentence."
Her daughter, who is now a teenager, was not at court. The mother said she could not face the man or his family.
When asked how the girl was, the mother replied, "She's alive".
The woman, who also cannot be named to protect the girl's identity, said it had been a heart- and soul-destroying experience from the moment her daughter came forward and told her about the abuse.
"I also wish there was no eligibility for parole for child sex offences," she said.
"I think that they should be given the maximum sentences and serve them consecutively."
The man received various jail terms for the offences, which will be served concurrently.
If the jail terms were consecutive, he would have been jailed for about 25 years.
He will be eligible for parole after serving at least half of the six-and-a-half-year sentence.
He has been in jail since March last year and will be eligible for parole in mid-2017. - APN NEWSDESK
