Abbott in danger of losing the Canning by-election

THE Abbott government is in danger of losing the by-election caused by the death of sitting member Don Randall.

Yesterday's Newspoll showed a 10% swing against the government in the West Australian seat of Canning.

Mr Randall extended the Coalition's margin to almost 12% at the 2013 federal election, but with the by-election set down for September 13 the Labor Party might make further inroads.

The Liberal Party has nominated SAS captain Andrew Hastie as its preferred candidate.

Labor expects to preselect its candidate this weekend.

The by-election is seen as a major test of the Abbott government's ability to be re-elected at next year's federal poll.
