A quarter of carers are abused by those they care for: study
ONE in four Queensland carers who participated in a quality of life survey reported they have suffered abuse at the hands of the person they care for.
The unpaid family carers said they experienced physical, financial, emotional, deprivation or sexual abuse.
Carers Queensland's survey found many carers suffered more than one type of abuse.
The organisation's president, Jim Toohey, said the issue needed to be addressed during National Carers Week, from October 11 to 17.
There are believed to be about 2.86 million family and friends providing care and support to people with a disability, mental illness, chronic medical condition or a frail older person in Australia.
Carers suffering abuse can contact the National Carers Advisory Line on 1800 242 636 or Lifeline on 13 11 14.
"It is important to note that these carers are the ones speaking up about their abuse," Mr Toohey said.
"We suspect that there may be other carers being abused who do not recognise it as abuse, or who feel too ashamed to admit to it."
