$871k donation to help save our reef

A SUNSHINE Coast foundation gave nearly $900,000 to the Fight for the Reef last financial year.

Australian Electoral Commission records show the Sunshine Coast's Thomas Foundation gave $871,000 and the Blue Mountains-based Pace Foundation donated $500,000.

The returns show WWF Australia spent $695,373 on printing and distribution on political advocacy, plus $46,310 on opinion polling. The Thomas Foundation's Rowland Hill said it gave a lump sum to WWF.

Records confirm at least $49,000 of the donation went on communication of matters of public interest in relation to the Great Barrier Reef".

He said the fund's interest was in ensuring the reef was properly protected, and the foundation was still concerned about the hand-over of environmental approval powers to the state and a lack of assessment of the cumulative impacts of new projects near the reef.
