50,000 watch emu caught legging it up in Emerald

A VIDEO of a frightened emu legging it across the main street of a Queensland outback town has had almost 50,000 views and786 shares since it was uploaded to Facebook on Wednesday.

University student Kristyl Pike said she was driving along Emerald's Clermont Street about 10.30am on Wednesday when she saw one half of Australia's coat of arms getting into a flap in the middle of traffic.

The 23-year-old said she was excited to film the road runner causing a spot of bother in the normally sleepy central Queensland town.

"He was darting across the road, he was heading east from one side of Emerald all the way to the other," she told the Brisbane Times.

"It was causing lots of traffic, people couldn't get past him, he would dart from one lane to next.

"We were saying  'please don't hit our car."

A Central Highlands Regional Council spokeswoman said the emu probably panicked after it wandered into town via the local railway line.

She could not confirm that the giant bird was local icon Eddie the Emu who one Emerald Facebooker said "loves following tractors, especially blue and green coloured ones". - ARM NEWSDESK
