48 charged after Brisbane nightclub 'party' drug crackdown

FORTY-EIGHT people have been charged with drug offences following a police operation targeting the distribution of synthetic based "party" drugs and cocaine in Brisbane nightclubs.

A total of 175 charges were handed out with 10 people being charged with trafficking dangerous drugs, and a further 21 with 106 counts of supply.

Operation Mike Compass began in June 2014 by members of the State Crime Command's Drug and Serious Crime Group and closed today after a series of raids in Brisbane.

During the operation, detectives seized over $100,000 in drugs including MDMA, cocaine, cannabis and methyl amphetamine (ICE). Most of the drugs seized were in highly pure forms of the drugs.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tony Parsons from the Organised Crime Investigation Group said the operation had focused on the distribution of ecstasy, cocaine and ice within venues.

"Police have used a number of strategies throughout this operation that have helped bring us to a successful conclusion, and a number of people have been arrested," Detective Senior Sergeant Parsons said.

"It is our intention to send a message to those who seek to infiltrate venues and sell drugs, that we are out there intercepting you at every point, from importing the chemicals and producing the drugs, right through to the sale.

"The drug culture adversely affects people's lives, and the community inherits so many problems through the trade. People that choose to make the decision to sell drugs need to know that police are working tirelessly to put a stop to their illegal business," Senior Sergeant Parsons said.

  • A 35-year-old Spring Hill man has been charged with trafficking and 14 counts of supplying cocaine and ecstasy pills (MDMA).
  • A 20-year-old Algester man has been charged with trafficking and eight counts of supplying ecstasy pills (MDMA).
  • A 19-year-old Tingalpa man has been charged with trafficking and four count of supplying of ecstasy pills (MDMA).
  • A 19-year-old Hawthorn man has been charged with trafficking, 12 counts of supplying ecstasy pills (MDMA) and possession of ecstasy pills (MDMA).
  • A 20-year-old Sunnybank man has been charged with trafficking and 18 counts of supplying ecstasy pills (MDMA).
  • They have all been remanded in custody and will appear at the Brisbane Magistrates Court at a later date.
