THE news that Big White Furniture store at the Top of Town is to close next month is both surprising and sad.
If any trader deserves to stay in business, it's Big White.
Over 93 years, the iconic family concern has earned a reputation for great customer service and quality products.
I've spent many happy hours "browsing" at Big White. And I've made quite a few purchases over the years.
At every visit to the store, the staff were attentive, friendly and ready to answer questions.
Shopping there was a pleasurable experience.
Jason White, who has worked at the store for 22 years, will no doubt be heartbroken to end a business dynasty that began with his great-grandfather John.
What a shame that Big White has to close down when the Top of Town precinct is making real headway in attracting shoppers and diners with its unique, welcoming atmosphere.
Mr White says a combination of increased competition, decreased foot traffic in the CBD and the closure of neighbouring electrical business Hoey and Ploetz have contributed to his decision to shut down.
Basically, the family was faced with the choice of making the store bigger, with a greater range of products, or getting out of the business.
I and generations of satisfied customers wish them well.
While we're on the subject of "change"- that's what voters reportedly desire in the coming state election on March 24.
But what sort of change? Just what do Ipswich voters want their next crop of MPs to do to improve our lifestyle and future?
Next week The Advertiser will list the candidates running for the seats of Ipswich, Ipswich West, Bundamba, Lockyer and Beaudesert.
The way things are going, there'll be a good choice of wanna-be politicians with a wide range of views. We'll ask the candidates about election issues our readers put at the top of their priority list.
Among them, we'll expect to include education, the environment, hospitals, population growth....
If you have an issue that you'd like debated, contact us on ipsedit@qt.com.au or text 0411 622 720.
