Victoria Azarenka wins the Australian Open.
BELARUS' Victoria Azarenka has pummeled Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-0 to win her first Grand Slam and become this year's Australian Open women's champion.
The 22-year-old began the final with a shaky first two games, but after regaining composure, never took a backward step in dismissing the three-time Grand Slam winner Sharapova.
Azarenka took 46 minutes to claim the first set, but it was in the second she showed her class, breaking the Sharapova serve three times and running away with the match with nine straight games.
Azarenka's victory also gives her the number one world ranking after Caroline Wozniacki lost to Kim Clijsters in the quarter-finals.
