WHEN Ipswich Grammar School’s top soccer and rugby union teams competed on Saturday, they were proud to wear pink.

The boys’ pink jerseys and socks were worn to highlight Think Pink week – a fundraiser for the Wesley Hospital Kim Walters’ Choices Program – and to honour a much-loved teacher.

Track and field coach Peta Green died in 2009, aged in her 30s, after battling breast cancer.

IGS pink week co-ordinator Alec Teevan, a Year 11 student, said Ms Green’s passing affected the whole school community.

“She was a great coach, teacher and mentor who got along with the boys really well,” he said.

“A lot of boys’ families have been affected by breast cancer.

“Last year we ran the fundraiser in October. This year we thought we’d align ourselves with the Choices program.”

Choices was launched in 1998 as a legacy of Kim Walters who was diagnosed with breast cancer while pregnant with her third child.

Sadly, Kim lost her 18-month battle with cancer in 1998.

“We raised $9500 last year and we gave that to Choices,” Alec said.

“This year we’re having a barbecue, free dress day and a Think Pink concert.

“We’re hoping to raise $10,000.

“We’re also selling ties, wrist bands, caps, ankle socks and pink ribbons.”

The IGS concert will be held on Thursday, July 28, from 7pm at the school auditorium, Darling St, featuring talented soloists and ensembles. Entry is $5.
