WITH two sons under the age of four, Wendy Yates knows a thing or two about boisterous play.

To help her boys keep strong during their rumbles and tumbles, the Ripley mum ensures they eat healthy foods each day.

One of the most important sectors of the healthy food pyramid is calcium-rich food to help in the development of healthy bones and prevention of osteoporosis throughout life.

“Being boys, they're usually outside being active,” Mrs Yates said.

“Basically we stick to yoghurts, milk and cheese when it comes to dairy.

“Aidan goes to kindy three days a week and they have a pretty strict healthy eating policy there.

“We pack what's called everyday foods and limit the ‘sometimes' foods.

“I think he knows enough for his age about healthy eating.”

Dairy Australia dietician Glenys Zucco said three serves of dairy every day provided most people with enough calcium.

“Consuming enough calcium is critical for building and maintaining bones throughout all stages of life,” Ms Zucco said.

To engage children and teachers during National Healthy Bones Week from August 1, students have been invited to participate in the ‘Want to build strong characters?' competition.

Classes are invited to create and submit a National Healthy Bones Week character via a painting, drawing, photo or sculpture.

The winning school will be visited by a celebrity chef for a calcium-rich, interactive cooking class.
