Hospital celebrates 150th birthday

IPSWICH Hospital is set for a celebration this week to mark 150 years of health care.

According to historical records, the hospital was completed in November 1859 and admitted the first patient on March 3, 1860.

Darling Downs-West Moreton Health Service District chief executive officer Pam Lane said a variety of events was planned.

“Ipswich Hospital has an amazing history and we have a week of activities and celebrations planned to mark this special occasion,” she said.

Events are designed to reflect the hospital’s past, present and future.

“Every day this week there will be a special event to mark the occasion,” Ms Lane said.

“A staff photo competition, unveiling of a celebratory quilt, Ipswich Hospital expansion display, the official opening of the AE Wilcox Memorial Museum, staff lunches and a birthday cake are all on the agenda.

“We plan to celebrate with the staff and patients on March 3 with a birthday cake and special staff lunch.”

All babies born that day will be presented with a special anniversary gift pack, in partnership with the Ipswich City Council.

“It’s a happy coincidence that the city of Ipswich is celebrating its 150 birthday celebrations this year too,” Ms Lane said.
