Unemployed? "Start a business and hire people, I dare you"

UNEMPLOYED Australians should stop expecting someone else to find or create them a job, but instead should start their own business and hire people.

That was the view of industrial relations expert Grace Collier on ABC's Q&A on Monday night, a view which ignited tensions on the panel show.

The comments came as panelists considered whether it was worthwhile for the government to subsidise certain industries, for example the car-marking sector, in order to save jobs.

But Ms Collier said governments have no obligation to find jobs for workers.

The News Corp columnist said "society doesn't owe you a job".

"The Government can't get you a job. The Government shouldn't have to get you a job. There's no such thing as Government money. There's your money and my money," she said.

"Everybody has something that they're good at … You work out what you're good at and you try and make a career out of that."

Greens Leader Richard Di Natale said there were now less jobs than people in Australia.

"People can start their own businesses," she replied.

"It's terrible, isn't it? Wouldn't it be awful to have to start your own business because someone else has to give you a job?"

"Why don't you start a business and hire some people? Go on. I dare you."

The latest ABS employment figures show 721,000 Australians are out of work.
