Roar's promise to rebound from thrashing by Jets

FOOTBALL: Brisbane Roar defender Jade North (pictured) said it was up to the players to prove Sunday's 4-0 loss to Newcastle Jets was just a blip.

North, who was skipper in the absence of the suspended Matt McKay, said the group had plenty of character to bounce back against Central Coast Mariners this Saturday after coach John Aloisi called the weekend performance the worst in his time in charge at the club.

"We had a game plan and we didn't execute,” the central defender told reporters yesterday. "Individually and collectively, we have got to put our hands up and say it wasn't good enough. At Brisbane Roar we have standards and we have to match those standards.

"Next week is going to be totally different and I know we are going to front up.

"As players we have got a responsibility and we have to look at ourselves in the mirror and make sure we take that responsibility.”

North, who will hand the skipper's armband back to McKay for this Saturday's clash with the Mariners in Gosford, said as it was early in the season, the team had time to improve.

"I don't think it's a wake-up call,” he said. "But, on the day, for whatever reason we were not at the races.

"For myself I have a lot of pride and I was the leader of the team and I have to make sure the boys are ready to go week in week out.

"In that regard I was disappointed with myself a little bit and I am going to do everything I can to turn it around and make sure this does not happen again.

"All we can do is get the performances right and the results will come, I have no doubt.”
