Plenty of laughs in adult holiday flick

AS WE enter the month of December, so begins the season of Christmas - meaning crowded shops, carols in the workplace and of course, a string of holiday themed movies in the cinema.

The Christmas movie, usually told through a reconnecting family or a child who embodies the spirit of Christmas, is as much a staple of Hollywood's calendar as the summer blockbuster and the end-of-year Oscar bait.

This made it all the more unusual when we found out that Seth Rogan, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anthony Mackie were starring in their own adult Christmas adventure, The Night Before, although I suppose after The Interview nothing could be too surprising.

Three friends, Ethan, Isaac and Chris have a yearly Christmas Eve tradition of alcohol-fuelled mayhem across New York City. Now, with families and careers getting in the way, they decide to make this Christmas their last, wildest night together.

Those familiar with the key players probably have a pretty good idea what they're in for.

Drugs, religion, violence - nothing is off the table in this Christmas comedy, and although the actors certainly aren't playing characters we haven't seen before, they definitely know how to make audiences laugh, a lot.

What it lacks in originality, The Night Before more than makes up for in its commitment to the laugh. There are few cheap jokes, even gags that needed almost the entire film to set up eventually paid off.

Sure, it gives in to the usual holiday clichés and doesn't do as much with its premise as it perhaps could have, but The Night Before has enough fun to forgive this. It's exactly the sort of hilarious adventure we need this close to Christmas.
