Disgraced football coach Frank Farina returns to the game

THREE years after being sacked by the Brisbane Roar for a drink driving offence, Frank Farina has been appointed head coach of Sydney FC.

The 48-year-old, who coached the Socceroos from 1999-2005, has the job until the end of the season, chief executive Tony Pignata saying results would determine whether that was extended.

"Franks knows that. If things improve and change then he's in the box seat," Pignata said.

When asked what the benchmark was for Farina to stay on, Pignata indicated a place in the finals would be the minimum requirement.

"If we get in the top six that would be a great result," he said.

"The aim is to get in the finals - once you get in the finals anything can happen."

Farina, who will be in charge for the game against Melbourne Heart on Sunday afternoon, said he was confident the club had the ingredients to bring success.

"There are some very good players at the club, some of which I've worked with previously. I've got no doubt that with hard work we can turn things around and get Sydney FC heading in the right direction," he said.
